Zimbabwe-China mutual medical initiative to restore vision for 600 cataract patients

The medical team consists of 11 Chinese ophthalmologists

A large-scale cataract surgery initiative is set to take place in Zimbabwe, offering free procedures to 600 patients as part of a partnership between Zimbabwe and China.

The programme, scheduled from 24 to 28 February at Zimbabwean hospital, aims to improve eye health and restore sight to those affected by cataracts.

The medical team consists of 11 Chinese ophthalmologists, as reported by
ZBC News, a partner of TV BRICS. The initiative marks the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Zimbabwe and China and the 40th anniversary of their medical cooperation.

As part of the project, the team will provide not only surgical expertise but also medications, surgical consumables, and advanced medical equipment.

Government Chief Ophthalmologist Boniface Macheka explained that screening is currently underway, with the final assessment scheduled for 23 February. Eligible patients, aged 18 and above, must meet specific health criteria to ensure they can safely undergo surgery under local anaesthesia. Doctors will assess conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and other infections that could complicate the procedure.

This initiative not only aims to restore sight but also strengthens medical collaboration between Zimbabwe and China, enhancing knowledge exchange and technical cooperation in the field of ophthalmology, the source claims.
