Brazilian President Lula da Silva held a meeting with World Bank President Ajay Banga. The head of the financial institution expressed support for the launch of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, a key initiative of Brazil’s G20 presidency. This is reported by the government of the Latin American country.

Interested countries and institutions have already expressed their desire to join the alliance. The initiative will be officially launched during the G20 summit in November.

Banga praised the results of the Brazilian government’s Bolsa Família (Family Grant) programme. He said he usually cites it as an example of a successful social policy that helps provide assistance to those in need.

Lula da Silva came up with the idea for the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty when the country took over the G20 presidency. The initiative involves presenting the practical experience of other countries to states that want to adapt and implement these policies on their territory.
