Vietnam to increase corn imports in 2024
According to statistics from the General Department of Customs, the country imported 5.74 million tonnes of corn worth US$1.43 billion from world markets at the end of last month.
Compared to the same period last year, the import volume increased by 34 per cent, according to
Vietnam News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.
In the first seven months of 2024, Vietnam imported corn from five major markets, of which 3.19 million tonnes came from Argentina, accounting for 55.5 per cent of the country’s total imports.
Argentina is Vietnam’s main trading partner for maize imports.
This shows the active development of trade relations between Vietnam and Argentina and that Argentina plays an important role in meeting Vietnam’s food needs for maize.
Brazil, Vietnam’s second largest maize supply market, reached 1.57 million tonnes in the first seven months of 2024, accounting for 27.4 per cent of the country’s total imports.
Vietnam also imports corn from markets such as Thailand, Laos and India.
Agro-economy experts believe that to reduce dependence on corn imports, Vietnam should take steps to develop domestic grain production.
