The South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) has decried the exclusion of the tripartite alliance partners from the discussions on clauses 4 and 5 of the Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Act.
The three-month discussion period for parties in the Government of National Unity (GNU) on the clauses ended last Friday.
In September, President Cyril Ramaphosa put a hold on implementing the clauses to allow for the discussions.
Sadtu General Secretary Dr. Mugwena Maluleke says the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) was excluded from the discussions.
Maluleke says, “The tripartite alliance has been left out of the discussions. There were some discussions that were secret at the level of Nedlac (National Economic Development and Labour Council), we are the convener of the labour constituency in Nedlac as Cosatu, we were to even be informed around that particular process. We only knew when the so-called agreement was signed.”
“So, the tripartite alliance has not been involved, hence you have had the Communist Party (SACP) during the weekend take a decision to support Sadtu’s legal action as well as the industrial action on the first day of reopening of schools in January 2025,” he adds.
