The ‘rot’ in eThekwini electricity dept shocking: DA

The Democratic Alliance (DA) Caucus leader in eThekwini, Thabani Mthethwa says most of the smart electricity meters that the city purchased to the tune of R 500 million have been bypassed.

This has resulted in the city losing revenue.

Mthethwa says the electricity department has become a liability to the city and a burden to taxpayers. He says there are meters that have not been read for a year.

“The rot in that department, the electricity department, is shocking. You would recall that the head of that unit is on suspension. There’s a lot that’s going on there. I think instead of that department being able to generate income for the city of eThekwini, it is instead a burden to the rate payers.

“We are going to be asking for forensic investigation because those that are found to have transgressed they must face the might of the law,” adds Mthethwa.
