Thai Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nikondet Phalangkun: Joining BRICS would allow Thailand to leverage further in advancing South-South co-operation
The country wants to join the alliance at the upcoming summit
Thailand has expressed its intention to become a full member of BRICS and hopes to join the international alliance at the upcoming autumn summit in Kazan. This was announced by Thai Foreign Ministry spokesman Nikorndej Balankura at a briefing in Bangkok.
Joining BRICS would allow Thailand to leverage further in advancing South-South cooperation as well as to play a more proactive role and contribute to crafting the global architecture, he said.
“BRICS will now discuss the issue at different levels in ascending order from the senior officials’ level to the level of country leaders. We hope the result will be positive and Thailand will join the association at the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, in October this year,” Nikorndej Balankura emphasised, stressing that the kingdom has been invited and will participate in the meeting.
Earlier, Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa handed Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov a letter requesting that the country be granted full BRICS membership.
