On the eve of the joint sitting of the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces for the opening of the 7th Parliament of South Africa, South Africa’s Minister of Electricity and Energy, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, spoke about the planned energy mix and its significant impact on future supply.

The minister stressed the crucial role of South Africa’s “big six” minerals – copper, platinum group metals, uranium, lithium, nickel, and rare earth elements – in South Africa’s shift from greenhouse gas emissions to clean electricity generation. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa emphasised the need for an integrated industrial policy to drive economic growth and the importance of the country’s natural gas discoveries in the transition from coal-fired to gas-fired power.

“These discoveries are key because domestic gases are the cheapest form of generation, shielding us from price fluctuations and currency risks,” he said.

Experts are confident that a focus on an integrated energy mix, monitoring sectoral performance, and establishing a sovereign wealth fund will secure South Africa’s economic future.
