Cape Town, South Africa – The 9th Annual Ubuntu Awards took place on January 8, 2025, at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, celebrating South Africans who have made significant contributions to the country’s global reputation.
Held annually after the Opening of Parliament and the State of the Nation Address, the prestigious ceremony brought together leaders from business, civil society, government, and diplomatic missions accredited to South Africa.
Honoring South Africa’s Global Contributors
Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Alvin Botes, welcomed the distinguished guests, emphasizing the importance of recognizing those who uphold South Africa’s values on the international stage. He invoked the words of African revolutionary Amílcar Cabral, stating that true progress is measured by improving people’s lives and securing their future. “Humanity is one, and the concept of Ubuntu must always guide us in overcoming challenges,” he said.

Deputy President Shipokosa Paulus Mashatile delivered congratulatory remarks, lauding the award recipients for their selfless dedication. “Individuals who serve others without seeking compensation deserve the highest accolades and respect that humanity can bestow,” he stated.
He further emphasized the importance of the awards, noting their alignment with South Africa’s role as President of the G20 in 2025. This year’s ceremony was held under the theme: “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability.”

“As has become tradition, we gather during the week of Parliament’s opening to recognize our patriots who represent South Africa with distinction,” the Deputy President said. “Their good deeds, talent, and determination for excellence shape how the world views our nation.”
A Night of Recognition and Inspiration
The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the OR Tambo Lifetime Achievement Award to Ambassador Thenjiwe Mtintso, honoring her lifelong contributions to South Africa’s global standing.

Launched in 2015, the Ubuntu Awards celebrate South Africans who enhance the nation’s image through diplomacy, business, culture, and humanitarian efforts. Each year, the ceremony continues to shine a spotlight on individuals who embody the spirit of Ubuntu—promoting unity, generosity, and service to humanity.
The 2025 event reaffirmed South Africa’s commitment to recognizing those who carry the nation’s banner with pride and purpose, inspiring future generations to do the same.
