Sol Plaatje Municipality new leadership gets mixed reaction

Political parties in Northern Cape have expressed mixed views following the recall of the Mayor of Sol Plaatje Municipality, Kagisho Sonyoni, who was the youngest mayor to occupy the position in the province.

Sonyoni was recalled last week and will be replaced by an NCOP member and former MEC, Barbara Bartlett.

The 65-year-old is expected to take the reins of the municipality in December and the former Premier of the province, Dipuo Peters will be the Speaker of council.

Provincial Chairperson of EFF Shadrack Tlhaole says the ANC failed to support Sonyoni and their intervention to bring Peters and Barlett to rescue the municipality, will not bring any change.

“The only reason we are not happy about it is because it affects the people of Sol Plaatje. By recycling your pensioners like Mme Dipuo and Barbara Bartlett. These two have demonstrated that they don’t have the capacity to lead in this sphere. Both of them were in the provincial government, not only at the legislature but the executive of this province. The problem that we see in Sol Plaatje, that the ANC thinks that the two can intervene and help to give our people service delivery is far-fetched, it is not going to happen” Tlhaole adds.
