Scientists use AI to recognise ancient Belarusian texts

The country is in the process of developing a programme capable of translating images of ancient texts into electronic format

Belarusian scientists are actively introducing artificial intelligence in linguistic research, opening new opportunities for preserving and popularising the native language. This was reported by Igor Kopylov, Director of the Yakub Kolas Institute of Linguistics of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. This is reported by
BelTA, a partner of TV BRICS.

The Institute has developed a synthesiser of Belarusian speech, designed to facilitate access to information in the Belarusian language for everyone, including people with visual impairments. “The synthesiser allows converting textual information into audio information, which makes it accessible, for example, when using ATMs,” explained Kopylov.

The AI is also being used to recognise ancient Belarusian texts from ancient printed editions. A junior researcher at the institute, Daria Matesha, is working on creating a programme capable of translating images of ancient texts into electronic format. “Processing ancient texts manually is very time-consuming. Using AI makes it possible to significantly speed up this process and make historical heritage more accessible for study,” Matesha said.
