Saudi Arabia expands public transport network in Jeddah with major upgrades

The expansion aims to make Jeddah’s public transport system more accessible, reliable, and secure

Jeddah is set to undergo a significant transformation in its public transportation system with the introduction of new routes, an expanded bus fleet, and improved taxi services. This is reported by
Arab News.

Starting from 1 April, the number of bus routes in the city will increase from six to 14, with 91 new buses being introduced, including three electric vehicles. The expansion will also see the number of bus stops grow from 46 to 383, aiming to accommodate up to 9 million passengers annually.

In addition to expanding bus services, plans are in place to introduce an exclusive public taxi franchise designed to improve service quality and operational efficiency.

The new taxi system will feature a standardised visual identity, official uniforms, designated taxi parking areas, and digital passenger information screens inside each vehicle.

The improvements also include enhanced safety measures, with buses equipped with surveillance cameras linked to a central control system using facial recognition technology.

Officials emphasised that the expansion aims to make Jeddah’s public transport system more accessible, reliable, and secure for all passengers.
