At a press conference following the meeting, he said the ministers discussed preparations for the BRICS summit in Kazan and for a ministerial meeting of the association’s countries in late September in New York on the margins of the UN General Assembly (UNGA). According to Lavrov, Russia and Egypt are united in their opinion that the Arab republic’s accession to BRICS has given impetus to the development of bilateral partnership.

In addition, the Russian diplomat pointed out that the settlement platforms developed within the framework of the group are attracting more and more countries.

For his part, Badr Abdelatty said that Egypt expects Lavrov’s participation in the ministerial meeting on countering terrorism on the margins of the UNGA on 27 September. At a press conference following the talks, he also invited his Russian counterpart to visit Cairo.

In addition, the head of the Egyptian diplomatic ministry met with Russian Industry and Trade Minister Anton Alikhanov on 16 September. In talks with him, Badr Abdelatty pointed to the need to deepen economic co-operation between Russia and Egypt.

“We need to work on strengthening trade and investment relations between our countries in a number of sectors, as well as to promote the increase of Egyptian exports to Russian markets,” he said.

Earlier, Russian Ambassador to Cairo Georgy Borisenko said that Egypt is a significant partner for Russia and acts as a link in the dialogue with other states of the African continent. The diplomat also stressed that under the leadership of President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, the countries have entered a new era of cooperation by signing the Strategic Partnership Agreement, which came into force in 2021.
