Russian Ambassador to Ethiopia characterises African country’s accession to BRICS

The diplomat recalled that this state is among the founders of key international structures

Ethiopia’s accession to BRICS is a vivid evidence of the growing role of the African state in the international arena, Russian Ambassador Evgeny Terekhin said. This is reported by
ENA.

The diplomat recalled that Ethiopia is on the list of countries that are at the origin of key international structures, including the United Nations and the African Union.

“Now, managing to become one of the first member countries of BRICS itself speaks much about the growing role of Ethiopia at the global stage,” he emphasised. The nation is endowed with numerous natural and human resources. The country’s role in South-South co-operation is also growing.

The Ambassador noted that the BRICS states have developed a special culture of dialogue based on respect for each other’s traditions and cultural peculiarities. The association accounts for 35.6 per cent of the world’s GDP. The combined share of the BRICS countries in the global economy is 58.9 trillion US dollars.

On 1 January 2024, Ethiopia joined BRICS, which previously included only Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, along with four other countries.
