The Association of Ranking Compilers (ARC) has announced the first pilot version of the BRICS university ranking, which includes 600 educational institutions from ten countries: Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Iran, India, Iran, UAE, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia and South Africa.

The top of the list are the leaders: Peking University took the first place, followed by Lomonosov Moscow State University, and Tsinghua University in third.

China presented the largest number of universities – 207, the second place in this indicator was taken by Russia with 161 universities, and India closed the top three with 93 educational institutions. Brazil is represented by 55 universities, Iran – 27, other countries have less than 20 universities in the list.

ACP Director General Dmitry Grishankov noted that the rating was created taking into account the specifics of BRICS and uses an adapted methodology of the international rating “Three Missions of the University”. The methodology attaches greater importance to the achievements of students in international competitions, while the financial indicators of higher education institutions have become less important. A new criterion that takes into account scientific co-operation with foreign colleagues from BRICS countries has been introduced.

The idea of the rating was proposed in 2023 by representatives of South Africa and supported at the meeting of BRICS education ministers. In 2024, Kazan decided to organise regular seminars on academic leadership.
