Ramaphosa to respond to SONA debate, then honour fallen soldiers

President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to deliver his response to the two-day debate on his State of the Nation Address (SONA) in Parliament later this afternoon.

Last week, the President presented his SONA to a joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament. Over the past two days, political parties in the House shared their reflections on the address, paving the way for Ramaphosa’s reply today.

Following his address, the President will travel to Pretoria to lead an official ceremony honouring the soldiers who were caught in a crossfire between DRC army forces and M23 rebels in the recent fight.

The tragic incident, which occurred nearly two weeks ago, claimed the lives of fourteen soldiers.

The families of 14 South African soldiers will receive their remains today at the Swartkop Air Force Base in Centurion.

The repatriation of their bodies was delayed, leaving the family members struggling to mourn.

Defence and Military Veterans Minister Angie Motshekga has stated that all the officers will be laid to rest in full military honour.
