The Electoral Reform Consultation Panel (ERCP) is urging South Africans to take part in reforming the country’s electoral system.
The Panel has been tasked with investigating, consulting and making recommendations with respect to the broad rules governing the manner in which the citizens select their leaders and how power is subsequently distributed amongst contestants at all levels of government.
After soliciting and receiving hundreds of submissions, the panel has now published a discussion paper as the foundation for public hearings that will be held early next year.
The document also outlines the key terms and concepts relating to the electoral system design.
ERCP member Tomsie Dlamini says, “We’re really pleading with every South African to please come out, especially the citizens. You know, when we also come out to the provinces, please do come out. I know it sounds like a technical subject but the way we have simplified it and the way it is going to take place, it’s going to be okay for people to participate, even though they might not know everything about the electoral system. Just making your input. What is it that you like? What frustrates you? What irks you? What is it that you want to see?”
