Nkosi Mandela: BRICS share of the world economy is 47 per cent
The grandson of South Africa’s first president has called for the expansion of the grouping to include states of the global South
The share of the BRICS group of countries in the structure of the world economy is 47 per cent, said Nkosi Mandela, grandson of South Africa’s first president Nelson Mandela and a member of the republic’s National Assembly.
“BRICS has offered the world community an alternative to a unipolar world. BRICS+ provides an alternative development path. We are now responsible for 47 per cent of the global economy,” he said.
Mandela recalled that the group’s 2024 summit will be held in Russia. He added that its participants will focus on Latin America. “We must think about how to invite more countries from the global South to BRICS,” the official concluded.
Russia took over the baton of chairmanship of the association on 1 January. The group currently includes 10 states: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Iran, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia. The BRICS summit will be held in the capital of Tatarstan from 22 to 24 October.
