Moscow to host race as part of the BRICS Marathon League
Earlier, Kazan and St. Petersburg hosted competitions of this level
The Moscow Marathon will be held in the Russian capital on 12-13 October. It will be held as part of the BRICS Marathon League. TV BRICS is the international media partner of the event.
The organisers inform that the competition will last two days. A 10 kilometre race will be held on October 12. Its participants will see the Novodevichy Convent, the buildings of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Russian Academy of Sciences, as well as Gorky Park.
A marathon distance of 42.2 kilometres is planned for Sunday. The route starts near the Luzhniki sports complex, passes through the city centre and along the embankments of the Moskva River past the main sights of the capital, such as the Kremlin, the Bolshoi Theatre, the Polytechnic Museum, the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, and the Stalinist high-rises. Runners will also finish in Luzhniki.
The Moscow Marathon has been held regularly since 2013. If the first time it was attended by about 5 thousand people, in 2023 more than 29 thousand athletes took part in the distance.
The agreement on the creation of the BRICS Marathon League was signed during the XXVI St. Petersburg International Economic Forum with the participation of the Russian Ministry of Sport. According to the organisers’ plan, the international races will help strengthen ties between the BRICS countries, develop mass sports, and increase the tourist flow to the cities hosting the marathons.
The first competition in the league format was the Kazan Marathon, which took place on 11-12 May. It was attended by 30 thousand people from 14 countries. On 29 June, the White Nights Marathon was held in St. Petersburg, which attracted almost 20 thousand athletes.
It is expected that in 2025 the BRICS Marathon League will include competitions held in other BRICS countries. It is planned to hold at least five races, two of which may take place in Russia.
According to the Ministry of Sport, the project is being promoted by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In addition, Brazil and China have already expressed interest in the league.
