MKP to map way forward over Hlophe’s JSC matter

Leader of the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) in Parliament, Dr John Hlophe says the party will reconvene to establish a way forward in relation to its designation to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

Hlophe was barred by an interim interdict of the Western Cape High Court from participating in the October sitting of the JSC interviews, that has since recommended candidates to fill positions in the Supreme Court of Appeal and the Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal Divisions of the High Court among others.

The party will, in the Western Cape High Court, defend Hlophe’s nomination and designation to the JSC by the National Assembly on 1 November.

It held a media briefing in Sandton, Johannesburg where Hlophe addressed the matter.

“I regard myself as a member of the JSC who was gagged. We know what happens in South Africa, when you lose, you lose and you lose. It did not surprise us. I was a judge myself for 29 years. It did not surprise us when we lost because we know that the judiciary is also captured.”

“There is no provision in terms of the law for an alternate member. I was the only member. I’m still the only member of the JSC. We have to go back to the drawing board and get somebody else deployed to the JSC,” adds Hlophe.
