The uMkhonto weSizwe Party says its rally at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium next month will restore confidence in its supporters. Despite the party securing the most votes in KwaZulu-Natal in May’s general elections it failed to secure an outright majority.
This forced it to become the official opposition when the IFP, the ANC, the DA and the NFP formed a government of provincial unity.
The party held a media briefing in Durban to announce its activities ahead of its first-year anniversary of the party on December 15th.
The MK Party’s Head of Presidency, Magasela Mzobe, says the party is working to win the eThekwini Metro in next year’s local government elections.
“This rally among other things will be used to mobilize the people of KwaZulu to start a progrmme of uniting the progressive forces, to reject the IFP/DA led government and reinstate the legitimate government led by MK Party as a party that got 45% of electoral support on the 29 May 2024. It is not just a celebration. It’s a call to action to the people of KZN to stand out and defend their votes, that they gave to MKP and for the part to conscientise the people of KZN to reject the illegitimate government.”
The party’s provincial convener Willies Mchunu, a former ANC premier and stalwart, says the mood is high in the run-up to the party’s 1st birthday celebrations.
“From the mood that we have witnessed so far, it is quite clear that people are looking forward to this. In clear terms, we have undertaken the task as the provincial working team to fill up the Moses Mabhida Stadium and we are confident that we will fill up the stadium,” says Mchunu.
