Mboweni dedicated his life to serving people of South Africa: ANC

Former South African Reserve Bank governor Tito Mboweni’s life has been described by his political home, the African National Congress (ANC), as a life lived in sacrifice, dedication and selfless service to the people of South Africa.

Mboweni, who passed away last night at the age of 65, died in a Johannesburg hospital after a short illness.

ANC spokesperson, Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri says Mboweni’s role in shaping South Africa’s democratic future during the last days of apartheid cannot be overstated.

“We also extend our heartfelt condolences to the Mboweni family, ANC structures, and all South Africans, who mourn the loss of this great man. Comrade Tito will be remembered not only for his immense contributions to the economy, but also for his unwavering connection to the people he served. His legacy of dedication, innovation, and service will remain a guiding light for generations to come,” adds Bhengu-Motsiri.

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has also joined scores of politicians in sending his tributes to the former finance minister.

Malema says he will miss Mboweni, as someone he looked up to as a young activist.

“I will miss the long telephone conversations that I used to have with you. As an elder, as someone that we grew up looking up to, especially some of us who come from the province of Limpopo, we will follow in your footsteps.”

“The family should know that their pain is our pain. We are with them during these difficult times. May the soul of comrade Tito rest in permanent perfect peace,” adds Malema.

“I’d like to extend and convey our deepest condolences to the immediate family of Tito Mboweni, our former minister of labour, minister of finance, and finally the Governor of the Reserve Bank. His passing is not only the loss to the family of the ANC where he comes from, it’s a loss to all of us as South Africans. We can only really wish and hope that our country is able and in a position to produce such leadership in the future,” explains Mashaba.

While most social media users will remember Mboweni for his cooking skills on social media platform X — Rise Mzansi leader, Songezo Zibi, says Mboweni’s legacy lies in the fruits of his labour.
