Mboweni a champion of continental integration: President Paul Kagame

Rwandan President Paul Kagame says the late former Finance Minister Tito Mboweni was a giant voice for Africa and a champion of continental integration.

Mboweni passed on last night after a short illness at a Johannesburg hospital.

Messages of condolences are pouring in from all spheres.

The former Finance Minister was one of the admirers of Kigali’s economic success.

President Kagame has expressed his condolences to the family, friends of Mboweni and to President Cyril Ramaphosa and the people of South Africa.

Kagame says Mboweni’s counsel was invaluable in the effort of reforming the African Union and in recent years, he dedicated his energy to implementing the reform as chair of the AU Peace Fund.

The Rwandan President also says Mboweni’s legacy will live on for generations to come.

President Cyril Ramaphosa says we have lost a compatriot who has served as an activist, economic policy innovator and champion of labour rights.

Family orientated man

The late former Finance Minister’s family says he was family orientated and had the country’s best interest at heart.

Stanley Mboweni says Mboweni’s passing has saddened them.

“[Tito] Mboweni was a family loving person, very humble, loved his community that is why [he] voluntarily joined the ANC in 1980 … went to Lesotho. Then when he came back, he continue mobilizing workers prior to the 1994 and after 1994. He served as the first labour minister under [former president] Rolihlahla Nelson Mandela’s government.”

Meanwhile, Capetonians have expressed sadness at the passing of the former Governor of the South African Reserve Bank.

This is what people in Cape Town had to say.

“We know Tito Mboweni as a good person. I know him, he was the minister of finance. Let his soul rest in peace. We are here on a vacation in Cape Town now, we heard these sad news of Tito Mboweni. We love you Tito Mboweni. Rest in peace.”

“We are saddened by the news of the passing away of Tito Mboweni. We are very deeply hurt because we never had any bad news about him. He was a good person. May his soul rest in peace. He will solely be missed by his family. ”
