Mapaila’s comments on GNU are unfortunate: Mashatile

African National Congress (ANC) Deputy President Paul Mashatile says utterances by South African Communist Party (SACP) general secretary Solly Mapaila that the ANC has sold out by including the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the government of national unity (GNU) are unfortunate.

Mapaila has maintained that the ANC would much rather have gone into the GNU with the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

Speaking to SABC News Politics Editor Mzwandile Mbeje, Mashatile says the views expressed by Mapaila are not those of the SACP.

Mashatile: “Well, there must be something troubling Solly, but not the SACP.”

Mbeje: “But he is the general secretary of the SACP?”

Mashatile: “Yeah, but he’s not the SACP.”

Mbeje: “Have you engaged him?”

Mashatile: “The SG is calling a meeting of what we call the alliance secretariat so that we can hear comrade Solly … [if they are] unhappy about something. But the party has not come to us and said, this is a sellout. There are ministers of the SACP in the cabinet. They would have walked away.”
