Deputy President Paul Mashatile is answering oral questions in the National Council of Provinces this afternoon. Back on the agenda is the matter of extortion in the township economy.
Both Mashatile and President Cyril Ramaphosa have been grilled by Members of Parliament during the last few weeks about the scourge of extortion that has taken root in almost every sector.
One of the questions the Deputy President will have to answer is on measures government is putting in place to prevent the township economy from falling prey to gangsters who extort businesses, as well as commenting on the sabotage of basic service delivery such as water and sanitation to communities in the townships by water tanker suppliers.
Besides questions about land redistribution and improving service delivery at dysfunctional municipalities, Member of the Provincial Legislature will also ask questions about how corruption will be rooted out at State Owned Enterprises, following the revival of the National State Enterprises Bill.
