Iran to expand overseas farming to 2 million hectares by 2029
Currently, the country utilises around 228,000 hectares for agricultural activities abroad
Iran has announced plans to significantly expand its overseas farming footprint, aiming to cultivate 2 million hectares of farmland abroad by March 2029. This initiative is part of the country’s five-year strategic vision to ensure food security amid growing domestic demand and global challenges such as climate change.
The initiative is designed to reduce Iran’s dependence on food imports. Currently, the country utilises around 228,000 hectares for agricultural activities abroad. This is reported by
Press TV, a partner of TV BRICS.
Iran has already established overseas farming projects in Brazil, where 50,000 hectares are dedicated to corn production. Additionally, the country has invested in cultivating barley, oilseeds, and soybeans in Kazakhstan, as well as initiating smaller-scale projects in Belarus and Russia.
By 2031, Iran aims to produce 10 million metric tonnes of food annually through its overseas farming projects. This effort aligns with the nation’s broader agricultural strategy to sustain its population of over 85 million people.
