Iran hosts seminar on ancient Chinese iron smelting and foundry technologies

The presentation consisted of two parts

The specialised seminar titled “Iron Smelting and Casting in Ancient China” was held at the National Museum of Iran. The presentation consisted of two parts.

The first part focused on metalworking techniques and included a description of various iron smelting furnaces found in archaeological excavations in China. The second part covered the achievements of the excavations at the Guantian site in Sanji County, Hunan Province, focusing on iron metallurgy.

Excavations at Guantian revealed a variety of iron furnaces and many artefacts indicating the high level of technology used at the site. Various iron alloys have also been discovered, including steel dating to periods comparable to the late Sassanid and early Islamic eras in Iran (Han Dynasty in China). This is reported by
Tehran Times, a partner of TV BRICS.

At the end of the seminar, Jebrael Nokandeh, the director of the National Museum of Iran, noted that during the Bronze and Iron Ages in Iran, metallurgy in China made significant advances, producing large bronze objects.
