India’s Prime Minister announces a significant reduction in poverty in the country
He spoke about the increasing prosperity of rural people
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing the News 9 Global Summit in New Delhi, pointed to the fact that the poverty rate in the country has reached the lowest level in history. This is reported by
ANI, a partner of TV BRICS.
The politician referred to a recent report on consumption pattern in the country. “Over the last 10 years, consumption in villages has grown much faster than in cities. This means that the economic well-being of villagers is increasing, they have more money to spend,” he said.
The Prime Minister said the government had designed infrastructure to meet the needs of rural areas, leading to better transport links, new job opportunities and increased income for women.
“This has strengthened rural India,” he said, adding that “for the first time in India, food expenditure has become less than 50 per cent of total expenditure. So, a family that used to spend all its energy on getting food, today can spend money on other things.”
The politician also emphasised India’s achievements in areas relevant to the 21st century.
