Indian team of young linguists travels to Brazil for the International Olympiad of Linguistics
Before leaving, the team is undergoing training to prepare for the challenges connected to language puzzles from around the world
The Linguistics Olympiad in Brazil is a competition where school students from around the world solve problems that require a deep understanding of language and linguistic phenomena. This is reported by
ANI, a partner of TV BRICS.
The Indian team, selected after national qualifiers, represents the best young linguists in the country.
Manish Shrivastava, the team leader and assistant professor at IIIT Hyderabad (International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad), emphasises the importance of studying linguistics for the development of artificial intelligence and for overcoming the language barrier in India, where many languages are used.
He also points out that a deep understanding of linguistic principles will enable the creation of more efficient artificial intelligence systems that can better understand and process information in different languages.
“When it comes to the Indian context, we want our young student population to be more aware of this linguistic diversity and the need to understand this linguistic diversity and become capable language researchers to contribute to the language research that would aid the development of the country itself,” he said.
Linguistics experts point out that natural language processing is now a promising field, and it is currently growing prosperously.
