India to expand power grid expansion with US$108.06 billion investment
The inter-regional transmission capacity is expected to increase to 143 GW by 2026-2027 and further to 168 GW by 2031-2032
The Union Ministry of Power has announced plans to invest US$108.06 billion in strengthening India’s power transmission network by 2031-2032, Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik. This is reported by
IANS, a partner of TV BRICS.
The proposed investment will focus on adding 1.91 lakh kilometres of transmission lines and increasing transformation capacity by 1274 Giga Volt Amperes (GVA) at 220 kV and above. Additionally, the plan includes the development of 33.25 GW of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) bi-pole links, which are essential for long-distance power transmission with minimal losses.
The inter-regional transmission capacity, currently at 119 GW, is expected to increase to 143 GW by 2026-2027 and further to 168 GW by 2031-2032. The plan also encourages the integration of advanced transmission technologies, cross-border energy interconnections, and greater private sector participation in the sector.
In addition to transmission network expansion, the government is accelerating the development of hydropower and renewable energy projects.
