India aims to establish Centres of Excellence in Green Hydrogen innovation

It will accelerate India’s progress towards clean energy self-reliance, supporting global climate goals

The Government of India has invited proposals to establish Centres of Excellence (CoEs) dedicated to Green Hydrogen research and development. Issued by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, this initiative aims to boost India’s green energy transition under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, with an allocated budget of US$12 million for these centres. The proposed CoEs will focus on advancing cutting-edge technologies in Green Hydrogen production, storage, and utilisation, reinforcing India’s commitment to a sustainable energy future. “The objective is to establish world-class Centres of Excellence for Green Hydrogen in India to foster innovation and promote sustainability, thereby enhancing energy independence in the long term,” stated the ministry.

These centres are expected to drive a low-carbon economy by facilitating extensive collaboration among industry, academia, and government agencies. Additionally, they will act as hubs for skill development, research, and knowledge sharing to enhance the entire Green Hydrogen ecosystem in India.

As part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission launched in 2023 with an overall budget of US$2.37 billion crore, these CoEs will accelerate India’s progress towards clean energy self-reliance, supporting global climate goals. The mission also addresses India’s need to reduce dependency on imported crude oil, thereby lowering trade deficits and reducing the demand for foreign exchange.

India’s Green Hydrogen push, supported by these CoEs, is expected to yield substantial innovations in green ammonia, energy storage, and sustainable energy solutions, positioning the country as a leader in the global Clean Energy transition.
