India and Russia discuss joint project in Arctic, comparable in importance to International Space Station

Alexander Makarov, Director of the State Research Centre of the Russian Federation – the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI), comments on Russia-India joint plans

According to Alexander Makarov, Russian scientists are working with the support of a unique vessel ice-resistant platform, which has the most modern equipment and machinery for scientific work in high latitudes. This was reported by
TASS.

A series of working meetings with representatives of scientific institutes in India will begin to discuss possible directions and topics for studying the natural environment of the Arctic region.

Makarov reminded us that Russia and India have been cooperating and helping each other in Antarctica for quite a long time within the framework of the relevant agreement, which can be expanded. According to him, Indian scientists have been conducting research in the Arctic for a long time, but the opportunity to work together with Russia in this region has attracted them significantly.

Indian scientists’ interest in the Arctic has increased significantly in recent times, as climatic restructuring in high latitudes is affecting the entire planet. The changing Arctic atmospheric circulation is affecting the monsoon system in India, with tangible consequences for agriculture.

New scientific knowledge will help us adapt to future climate change in time to minimise the damage that may occur. This is important and useful for all scientists in the world, emphasised the director of the AARI.
