Hung Thabazimbi council set to elect mayor, councillors

The hung Thabazimbi Municipality in Limpopo will today hold its first council meeting in which councillors and a Mayor will be elected.

Last week’s by-elections didn’t produce an outright winner.

This is the third electoral process in which a hung council has been produced since the 2016 Local Government Elections.

The provincial government dissolved the council three months ago.

This stemmed from political fighting between the African National Congress (ANC) and the Democratic Alliance (DA) which were in a coalition.

Each party claimed to be the legitimate administration and they ran parallel councils.

Political parties in the hung Thabazimbi Municipality started talks to form a coalition government immediately after the outcome of the by-elections results last week.

Seven political parties secured representation in a 23-seat council.

ANC has obtained ten seats, followed by DA with four and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) with three.

The Labour Party and Freedom Front Plus (FFPlus) have two each, while the uMkhonto we Sizwe Party and the Thabazimbi Residents Association secured one each.
