Head of Russian Ministry of Justice and BRICS ambassadors discuss creation of platform for sectoral co-operation

The task of the Council of Justice Ministers of the alliance is to strengthen co-operation in the legal sphere

Russian Minister of Justice Konstantin Chuychenko at a meeting with ambassadors of the BRICS countries proposed to form a permanent body for legal cooperation. This is reported by the press service of the
Ministry of Justice.

“The joint work of the justice ministries of the BRICS countries deserves its own special platform. That is why we want to take the initiative to create the Council of BRICS Justice Ministers,” said Konstantin Chuychenko. According to him, the task of such a body could be to strengthen co-operation in the field of justice based on the principles of equality and mutual respect.

The Russian minister added that special attention should be paid to mechanisms for improving investment arbitration. He noted that the international community’s efforts to settle investor-state disputes should be systemic and long-term.

“Our countries are a colourful palette of legal systems, schools and traditions. We need to seize the unique opportunity to learn from each other’s best legal practices,” the Minister said.

Currently, the St. Petersburg International Legal Forum is an effective platform for discussing the problems of international law and promising areas of co-operation. This year the first meeting of the BRICS justice ministers will be held at the St. Petersburg International Legal Forum, the ministry recalled.

Earlier, the Russian side presented the concept of establishing the BRICS International Investment Arbitration Centre. Currently, the alliance countries are considering the possibility of creating such an organisation.
