Gwamanda’s fraud case postponed to next year

The court case against former Johannesburg Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda and his co-accused has been postponed to January 28, 2025, for a trial readiness certificate.

Gwamanda appeared before the Protea Magistrate’s Court in Soweto today. He is facing fraud charges after allegedly defrauding Soweto residents in an alleged funeral policy scheme.

Some of his alleged victims opened a case last year and he handed himself over to the police on October 18.

The Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) investigation last year revealed that Gwamanda, who is an Al Jama-ah councillor, allegedly operated an illegal business in 2012.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) insists that it has a watertight case, while Gwamanda’s lawyer maintains that his client is innocent.

Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero fired Kabelo Gwamanda as Community Development MMC last month.
