Former mayor Kabelo Gwamanda out on bail after alleged fraud arrest

Former Johannesburg mayor Kabelo Gwamanda is out on bail after handing himself over to police on Friday.

Gwamanda reportedly sold funeral policies to residents in Soweto in 2011 through his company Ithemba Lama Africa however, those he sold to could not find the company offices to claim their monies.

According to his party Al Jama-ah, Gwamanda was asked by the Hawks Commercial Crimes Division to present himself to the Protea North South African Police Service station in Soweto.

He subsequently appeared before the Johannesburg Magistrates court charged with fraud; and then released on bail pending further investigations.

Al Jama-ah leader Ganief Hendricks has lauded Gwamanda for his courage and for cooperating with the police.

“The Hawks have been very fair in events leading up to Kabelo Gwamanda getting bail for allegations that 15 years ago there was R10 000 involved in a funeral scheme that went sour. And Al Jama-ah would like to congratulate councillor Gwamanda for his cooperation and his courage.”
