Ethiopia builds about 142,500 kilometres of roads

Road density has increased from 24.1 to 148.3 kilometres per 1,000 square kilometres

Over the past 26 years, Ethiopia has seen a significant leap in road infrastructure development. The country has built about 142,500 kilometres of roads, investing more than US$20 billion. This is reported by
Xinhua News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.

In 1997, the length of roads in Ethiopia was about 26,500 kilometres, and by 2023, it had reached over 169,000 kilometres. This is a significant increase that has improved accessibility and transport connectivity in the country.

The average distance to the nearest road has been reduced from 21 kilometres to 4.4 kilometres, facilitating the movement of people and goods.

The development of road infrastructure has also stimulated economic growth, creating jobs and boosting the construction industry.

Despite the successes, challenges remain in the sector, including high construction costs, poor pavement quality, road safety, and environmental issues.

Both local and foreign companies, particularly Chinese construction firms, are involved in the development of Ethiopia’s road network.
