COSATU in the Free State has threatened to cause disruptions if the ANC persists with reinstating convicted Matjhabeng Mayor, Thanduxolo Khalipha through backdoors.
COSATU has accused the ANC in the province of forcing the Matjhabeng caucus to vote in favour of Khalipha.
In December last year, Khalipha was found guilty by the Odendaalsrus Magistrate’s Court after assaulting his bodyguards.
COSATU provincial secretary, Tiisetso Mahlatsi says currently Matjhabeng is in the process of rebuilding. He says the municipality has stabilised and returning Khalipha will collapse what has been achieved.
Mahlatsi accused Khalipha of using municipal resources for his gains.
“The Executive Mayor of Matjhabeng, Khalipha, who collapsed the municipality and promoted an abuse of power through harassment of employees and using municipal resources for his personal gain, abused workers. This abuse was confirmed by the magistrate court which found him guilty. And they are not only trying to reinstate him but also forcing the council to pay him the six-months’ salary and reinstate his bodyguard while the man is sitting at his place not doing anything.”
