City of Tshwane Executive Mayor, Nasiphi Moya, says they are urgently working to restore the city’s finances. This comes as the municipality struggles to collect billions of rands owed to it by residents and businesses.
In an interview with SABC News, Moya details her 100-day action plan to save the metro, including settling the city’s almost R7 billion debt to Eskom by the end of this month.
“We need to raise revenue. We must stop billing people based on estimates. We said by the end of this month, 100 days, 95% of the bills, which is a tall order must be based on actual readings and not estimates. We have a lot of millions locked in disputes with businesses that don’t want to pay us because it is based on that. So, we wanted to reduce the number of disputes so that those millions could come to the coffers. We also have a billion rand debt that we owe to the workers in the form of salaries. By the end of this month, we have to resolve the Eskom debt and the issue of the employees,” she says.
