Chinese Foreign Minister: BRICS is driving force for growth of Global South
Wang Yi also named the venue of the SCO summit at the press conference
BRICS is playing an increasingly important role in international cooperation and becoming a major driving force for development in the Global South. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said this while addressing the third session of the 14th National People’s Congress.
He noted that Indonesia became a full member of BRICS earlier this year, and a number of states joined the association as partners. In this regard, the Minister emphasised the need to strengthen the role of the enlarged BRICS in promoting the interests of the countries of the Global South in the world arena. His words were reported by
CCTV+, a partner of TV BRICS.
“A distinctive feature of our era is the marked strengthening of the influence of the Global South. It accounts for more than 40 per cent of global GDP and contributes up to 80 per cent to global economic growth. The Global South plays a crucial role in maintaining peace, growing the world economy and reforming global governance”

The Chinese Foreign Minister pointed out that this year, Brazil will host the BRICS summit, South Africa will host the Group of Twenty (G20) leaders’ summit and China will host the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). He said the SCO summit would be held in the autumn in the city of Tianjin.
“We should keep development as a central international agenda item, build up the momentum, enhance our capacity, and advance hand in hand toward modernisation,” Wang Yi added.
He also recalled that in November 2024, Chinese President Xi Jinping unveiled eight priorities to promote global development. They include cooperation within the framework of the One Belt, One Road initiative, support for African states, implementation of the G20 action plan on anti-corruption, open scientific cooperation, and others.
