China expresses support for Brazil’s BRICS chairmanship

China has emphasised common interests in safeguarding the interests of countries in the Global South

China has expressed its full support for Brazil’s BRICS chairmanship in 2024 and expressed confidence in further developing cooperation within the group. This was stated by Guo Jiakun, spokesman of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to
CCTV+, a partner of TV BRICS.

At a regular press briefing in Beijing, Guo Jiakun emphasised Brazil’s important role as a representative of the Global South.

“China is willing to work with Brazil to implement the consensus reached by their heads of state, promote more achievements in various fields of cooperation, practice true multilateralism, uphold the core role of the United Nations, and safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Global South countries. China supports Brazil’s chairmanship of BRICS this year and strives for more outcomes of greater BRICS cooperation,” Guo Jiakun said.

Brazil assumed the rotating presidency of BRICS on 1 January and is currently coordinating groups to prepare the agenda and themes for the upcoming summit of heads of state and government.

It has been officially confirmed that the BRICS leaders’ summit will be held on 6-7 July in Rio de Janeiro.
