Cape Town reveals its beach safety strategies for the upcoming festive season

Cape Town’s mayor and a panel of experts engage in a discussion about ensuring safety in aquatic environments

The event was attended by Cape Town Mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis, along with member of the public services and health committee, Councillor Patricia van der Ross and members of the Parks and Recreation Authority. This is reported by

During her presentation, Recreation and Parks professional Helen Jordaan noted that 27.1 per cent of people drown in oceans, harbours and tidal water bodies, 22.9 per cent in ponds and lakes, 22.9 per cent in rivers and canals and 12.4 per cent in swimming pools.

Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis noted that more than 4000 law enforcement and emergency services will be involved this season.

“In total, more than 4,000 law enforcement and emergency services personnel will be working in shifts as part of the largest security deployment in the city’s history for the festive season. There will also be 683 lifeguards on duty this season,” Hill-Lewis said.
