Cairo is set to undergo significant redevelopment in the city centre
Cairo, the famous Egyptian city with a rich history and vibrant culture, is undergoing a major restoration of its city centre. It is part of a wider plan to boost tourism and stimulate economic development. This is reported by
CCTV+, a partner of TV BRICS.
The government has recently stepped up its efforts to restore the neighbourhood to its original form. Al Sharifain Street, the first street to be reconstructed, has been turned into a pedestrian zone.
The restoration and reconstruction of downtown Cairo will cost around US$200 million and aims to transform the area into a vibrant tourist destination with pedestrianised areas.
Art students have planned open air activities in downtown Cairo to build public support for the restoration initiative.
“Having different exhibitions here would strengthen the cultural bond with the people, and raise their awareness towards the place,” said Maryam, a student from the Faculty of Arts of the Helwan University.
