Brazil to expand programme that benefits schoolchildren from low-income families

Authorities intend to provide education opportunities for vulnerable populations

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva plans to announce the expansion of the “Pe de Meia” programme to support secondary school students, launched earlier this year. This is reported by
Metropoles, a partner of TV BRICS.

During the initiative, low-income students began receiving scholarships averaging R$9,200 (US$1600).

Earlier, a representative of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) reported that Brazil’s GDP per capita in 2023 increased by 2.2 per cent.

Analysts note that the Latin American country has implemented important initiatives in the education sector, such as the resumption of social programmes and investments aimed at improving literacy.
