Brazil launches project to reduce plastic waste in hotels and restaurants
The project will involve 14 countries
The Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation of Brazil with the support of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) announced the launch of an initiative to reduce the use of single-use plastic in the hotel and restaurant business.
The aim of the project is to find innovative solutions to reduce the production and utilisation of plastic. In the first phase, the initiative will be implemented in six cities: Belem, Salvador, Santos, Florianopolis, Rio de Janeiro, and Sao Paulo. They have been chosen for their special characteristics. In particular, Belem will host the UN Climate Change Conference in 2025 and Santos is a large port area with high levels of pollution. This is reported by the official website of the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation.
It is specified that 14 countries will participate in the project. The Brazilian government will allocate US$35 million for its implementation.
In addition, it is planned to create an innovation centre that will bring together representatives of science, government agencies and industry. It will become a platform for the exchange of ideas and development of technological solutions to reduce the use of plastic.
