Brazil has reached the 50 gigawatt (GW) mark for solar power plants in operation, becoming the sixth country to reach this level. This is reported by
Toda Palavra, a partner of TV BRICS.

According to data by the Brazilian Association of Photovoltaic Solar Energy (Absolar), small and medium-sized solar complexes account for the majority of the country’s energy generation systems, accounting for 33.5 GW of installed capacity. Large solar plants have an output of 16.5 GW.

From January to October 2024, 119 new solar power units were established in the country, adding 4.54 GW of taxed electricity in Brazil. 

Solar energy represents around 20.7 per cent of the installed capacity of the Brazilian electricity system, making it the second most important after hydroelectric power. 

Since 2012, solar energy has attracted R$229.7 billion (US$3,8 billion) in investments in Brazil and helped prevent the emission of 60.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide.
