On Wednesday 20 September, the President of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, met with the President of Paraguay, Santiago Pena, in New York, USA. This was the president’s last meeting as part of his trip to attend the 78th United Nations General Assembly.

This was the fifth meeting between the two leaders. The first three took place after Santiago Pena’s election at the end of April. Lula also attended the inauguration of the Paraguayan president in August, as reported by Brasil 247, a partner of TV BRICS.

At the meeting, the presidents discussed integration between the countries, especially the agreement on the Itaipu Dam, which is currently being negotiated.

They also discussed other projects that will boost ties between Brazil and Paraguay, such as a bioceanic corridor that will facilitate the movement of goods and the completion of a bridge between the city of Presidente Franco and Foz do Iguazu.

Paraguay and Brazil, two neighbouring countries in South America, have a strong bilateral relationship that covers various sectors, including the economy, energy and infrastructure. This relationship plays an important role in the stability and development of both countries.

According to the Central Bank of Paraguay, Brazil is the main destination for Paraguayan exports, accounting for 36.9 per cent of the total. This shows the deep economic ties between the two countries.

Brazil and Paraguay continue to develop their bilateral relationship in various sectors, which contributes to the stability and prosperity of both countries. This relationship confirms the importance of neighbourliness and cooperation in the South American region and will continue to play an important role in the future.
