At conference in Italy, experts discuss prospects of BRICS expansion

Experts from a wide range of scientific disciplines took part in the conference

The permanent research group on BRICS promoted by the University of Parma (Italy) and the BRICS LABORATORY of the Eurispes Research Institute (Italy) organized the conference entitled “The expansion of BRICS cooperation: what future prospects?”.

The objective of the initiative was to evaluate the impact of the entry of new member states on the internal and external cooperation model of BRICS coordination, on the role of BRICS in the construction of a new multilateral international order, on the BRICS contribution to sustainable development, on the support action carried out by the New Development Bank (NDB).

The conference was attended by experts and academics from the Universities of Northern, Central and Southern Italy and foreign universities as well as organisations.

Gianmatteo Sabantino, Associate Professor at Zhongnan University of Economics and Law (China), made a presentation on the BRICS contribution to the formation of alternative regulatory models of transnational economic cooperation.

“How is it possible to find a balance between the national strategies of the individual BRICS states and the common cooperation strategies promoted by the coordination? A valid answer can come from the action of the New Development Bank (NDB) and its commitment to sponsoring an original regulatory model of development cooperation, a synthesis of even radically different cooperative visions, anchored to the geopolitical priorities of the member countries,” he stated.

On the occasion of the 15th BRICS Summit, held in Johannesburg in August 2023, it was announced that six states had been invited to join the bloc. Following the decision of the Argentine President, Javier Milei, not to accept this invitation, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates joined the BRICS cooperation on 1 January 2024, marking the start of a new important stage in the BRICS evolutionary process.
