ANC to promote safe sexual practices and health literacy: Mbalula

The African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula says the party has resolved to prioritise educational campaigns that promote safe sexual practices and health literacy.

This is in response to the alarming increase in HIV infections among young people and the high rate of teenage pregnancies.

A number of underage teenagers gave birth on Christmas and New Year’s Day with the youngest being a 12-year-old girl from the Eastern Cape.

This raised alarm and a number of arrests have been made.

Mbalula briefed the media in Johannesburg yesterday, on the outcomes of the ANC National Lekgotla.

He says, “Of particular concern is the alarming increase in HIV infections among young people, particularly adolescent girls. We will ensure that interventions are designed to empower young people to make informed choices and we will work with communities to combat the social and economic factors that contribute to these issues.”
