Oksana Chusovitina, the revered 48-year-old gymnastics legend, has once again surprised the sporting world by reversing her earlier decision and making a remarkable appearance at the Hangzhou Asian Games. Initially, she had declared that she would not prepare for competition following her participation in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

The Uzbekistan Olympic Committee has now disclosed that Chusovitina is setting her sights on an even more ambitious goal – securing a place in the 2024 Olympics in Paris, as reported by
China Daily, a partner of TV BRICS.

In 2021, Chusovitina carved her name into the Olympic history as the oldest female gymnast ever to compete in the games. This remarkable feat marked her eighth Olympic appearance, breaking her own record for the most Olympic gymnastics appearances. Notably, she is one shy of the Olympic appearances record for a woman in any sport, held by Georgian shooter Nino Salukvadze, who competed in Tokyo at age 52.

Chusovitina’s colourful gymnastics career spans several decades and is marked by numerous achievements. She secured her inaugural world champion title in 1991 and claimed Olympic gold in 1992. Subsequently, she represented Uzbekistan in three consecutive Olympic Games before surprising the world with a transition to the German team for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Her dedication to her homeland led her back to representing Uzbekistan once more in the 2016 Olympics.

The gymnastics icon’s list of achievements is truly impressive, boasting two Olympic medals – a team gold from Barcelona in 1992 and a vault silver from Beijing in 2008. Furthermore, she boasts an astounding nine world championships medals in the vault discipline. Her extraordinary contributions to gymnastics culminated in her induction into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 2017.

Chusovitina’s decision to continue her gymnastics journey, with her sights firmly set on a potential appearance at the 2024 Paris Olympics, is a testament to her enduring passion and unwavering dedication to the sport.
