Lobby group AfriForum has accused the ANC of trying to create an impression that it is the ruling party by proposing constitutional reforms despite being in the Government of National Unity (GNU).
This comes after the ANC indicated last week that it will table proposed amendments to the Constitution to make expropriation without compensation possible.
AfriForum has threatened take legal action to protect private property rights in the country.
The group’s Head of Public Relations, Ernst van Zyl, “I think the fact that the previous attempts to try and amend the Constitution, particularly Section 25, to make expropriation without compensation possible, the fact that that first attempt failed so catastrophically, showed the rejection. And the strong reaction against any attempts to meddle with property and I think if they try it again, the reaction will be if not the same it will be even more intense. So, I don’t know exactly what they’re trying. It seems almost like a little bit of a ploy to try and create the impression that they are still the only sheriff in town.”
